Repertoire
The Spooky Men’s musical ethos is grounded in Georgian and Celtic male vocal traditions and Stephen Taberner’s gorgeously funky original songs and arrangements of suitable classics, but gladly stoops to any vaudevillean trash that has something important to say.
Concerns informing the repertoire arise from the joyful pathos of everyday maleness, in the shed and after breakfast. Stage presence is pointlessly grandiose and black, with a cunning taste in hats.
The debut CD Tooled Up has sold over 4,000 copies since its release in January 2005. It regularly airs on ABC Classic FM, ABC Local Radio and community radio and was reviewed enthusiastically in the Sydney Morning Herald on April 29 last year. The follow-up Stop Scratching It, brings a somewhat darker, more pungent musical flavour to familiar Spooky preposterousness, including Glagolitica, which faithfully renders the Spooky workshop experience. It was released in the UK during the 2007 tour, was launched in Australia in late 2007 and has sold almost 2,000 copies. Following further rave reviews, as in the Sydney Morning Herald on December 7, both CDs are now available from ABC Retail.
